China plans to offer training for millions of farmers on responsible

   use of pesticides

This year, China will offer training for millions of farmers on responsible use of

pesticides across the country in order to practically facilitate the responsible

use of pesticides and promote the green development of agriculture.

This year's training activities will be jointly organized by the National Agricultural Technology

Extension and Service Center of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, P.R.C (NATESC)

and the national crop protection system, in collaboration with China Crop Protection Industry

Association (CCPIA), CropLife China, and China Association of Pesticide Development &

    Application (CAPDA).

At the launch meeting of 2019 national training on responsible use of pesticides held a few days

ago in Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, Director Zhou Puguo of the

Institute for the Control of Agrochemicals, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (ICAMA) said

that the responsible use of pesticides concerns the production and quality safety of agricultural

products, and also serves as an important part of rural revitalization, poverty alleviation, and

industry revitalization. Agricultural technology extension and crop protection departments as

well as agricultural materials dealers shall recommend good pesticides to farmers while making

scientific prediction and forecast of plant diseases and pests in order to allow good pesticides

science to be applied in crops and targeted objects. The traditional practice of pesticide

application with an apparatus carried on the back of people should be changed through

vigorous research, development and extension of efficient pesticide application devices as well

as development of high-quality crop protection service teams.

Wei Qiwen, Secretary of the Party Committee of NATESC said this year’s training events,

including on-site training and online training of different types and at different levels and tiers,

would be innovative in their manner and method, arranged and progressed uniformly across the

country as a whole, with the focus on small farmers, new-type professional farmers, new-type

agricultural business entities and socialized crop protection service organization personnel, as

well as pesticide dealers and grass-roots technicians. According to him, these events would be

designed to train 100 instructors for responsible use of pesticides, 1,000 trainers for responsible

use of pesticides, 10,000 county-level instructors for responsible use of pesticides, 100,000

township-level specialized pesticide application operators, and 1,000,000 village-level pesticide

application operators. The training will include various courses regarding the knowledge on

pesticide administration laws and regulations, knowledge on scientific prevention and control

of crop diseases, pests, grass and rats, knowledge on responsible use of pesticides,

safeguarding measures for pesticide dispensing and application, protective measures for

pollinating insects, and requirements for recycling of pesticide containers, etc.

In recent years, the green development of agriculture has been continuously advancing in

China. The year 2018 saw a negative growth of pesticide consumption. The Ministry of

Agriculture and Rural Affairs proposed to boost decreased consumption and increased

efficiency of pesticides, recycle pesticide containers, and consolidate the effect of negative
